Normally, choosing transmutation asks which essences to convert, and then which ones to receive. However, my current essences were only 4 life, so "helpfully" it skipped the first step. Well I didn't notice that and selected 3 life essences ... assuming that was the "source". And I ended up with the same 4 life essences I started with.

I don't think that shortcut really helps. Consistency is a better UX choice.
