Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf4420222.29222409.jpg[/img] You and your crewmates on the ship *Tranquility* are working together to find a paradise island! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Tranquility,* players take turns playing numbered cards from their hand into a 6x6 grid. If they manage to fill the entire grid, and then play a *finish* card, [green]they win![/green] If someone is unable to take their turn (because they ran out of cards), [red]they lose![/red]2maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]There are 90 cards in the game:[/blue] • 80 cards numbered from 1-80. • 5 *"Start"* cards. • 5 *"Finish"* cards. At the beginning of the game, the number cards and "Finish" cards are divided as evenly as possible among all the players, becoming their [red]*personal decks.*[/red] One "Start" card is then shuffled into each one. Afterward, each player draws a hand of [blue]*5 cards.*[/blue]3tqt_drawpile_0000tqt_drawpile_0 6 tqt_cardpeice_11 7 tqt_cardpeice_24 7 tqt_cardpeice_46 7 tqt_cardpeice_70 7 tqt_cardpeice_72 7
Nekonyancer[blue]On our turn, we must perform one of the following actions:[/blue] • Play a card from our hand onto the 6x6 grid. • Discard two cards from our hand.4tqt_cardpeice_24000
NekonyancerLet's start by playing a card. *Select the [red]11[/red] in our hand. Place it [blue]here.[/blue]* You got an error, didn't you? Don't worry. It will work in a real game. Just *continue* instead.5tqt_cardpeice_11000tqt_placement_4 7 tqt_cardpeice_11 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Good! But why did we place the 11 on this particular space?[/blue] Well, cards can only be placed if they are... • *Higher* than all the cards to the *left.* • *Lower* than all the cards to the *right.* Though the spaces are arranged in a 6x6 grid, it might be easier to think of them as [red]one long connected string[/red] of spaces.2tqt_cardpeice_11670dfcc02210a00
NekonyancerThat means [red]*this space*[/red] is actually sandwiched between [blue]*these two spaces.*[/blue] It also means that almost the entire grid is to the *right* of the 11.3tqt_placement_11670dfcc02210a00tqt_placement_10 7 tqt_placement_11 6 tqt_placement_12 7 tqt_cardpeice_11 9
NekonyancerWe'll have to use numbers from *1-10* for the [blue]*four spaces*[/blue] to the left of the [red]*11.*[/red]4tqt_cardpeice_11670dfcc02210a00tqt_placement_0 7 tqt_placement_1 7 tqt_placement_2 7 tqt_placement_3 7 tqt_cardpeice_11 6
NekonyancerAt the end of our turn, we automatically drew from our deck until we had *5 cards* again, and we have apparently drawn our [red]*"Start" card!*[/red] In each game, the first player to draw their "Start" card *must* play it on their very next turn. [blue]But first, our teammate has to take their turn.[/blue]5tqt_cardpeice_91670dfcc02210a00tqt_cardpeice_91 6
NekonyancerThey placed the *2* in the first space of the grid. Great!1tqt_cardpeice_2670dfcc68918100
NekonyancerOkay, now for our next turn. As I said a moment ago, we must play the Start card. There's a special spot for it in the [red]*bottom-left corner.*[/red] You may need to scroll down to see it. Click on *Continue.* I'll click on [blue]*"Play Start Card"*[/blue] for you.2tqt_play_start_button670dfcc68918100tqt_play_start_button 2 tqt_placement_37 6
NekonyancerIn *1/2* player games, whoever plays the start card immediately draws *8/2* cards from their deck. Then, all players must collectively discard 8 cards. During this time, we can discuss how many we are willing to discard, but we can't get specific about card numbers. Hmm... [blue]Let's pause for a moment and see if our partner discards anything.[/blue]1tqt_cardpeice_24670dfcccdc39300
NekonyancerOkay, they discarded 3 cards. Let's jump in. *Select the [red]46.[/red] Click on [blue]"Discard card"[/blue] at the top.*1tqt_cardpeice_46670dfce0864d810tqt_cardpeice_46 6
Nekonyancer*Next, discard the [red]60.[/red]*1tqt_cardpeice_60670dfcec2a45310tqt_cardpeice_60 6
Nekonyancer*... and the [red]24![/red]*1tqt_cardpeice_24670dfcee56cbb10tqt_cardpeice_24 6
NekonyancerOur partner jumped back in and discarded the last two cards. That's a total of 8 discarded cards! Everyone drew back up to 5 cards.1maintitlebar_content670dfcfc81e7900
Nekonyancer[blue]A couple more things about Start cards...[/blue] Each player has one start card in their deck, but only *one* can be played in each game. After the first one is played, the others are useless, and can be discarded in the process of playing other cards. Even though we didn't have a choice in the matter, playing the Start card counted as our turn, so now it's our partner's turn again!2maintitlebar_content670dfcfc81e7900
Nekonyancer[blue]Our partner just played the 10 right next to the 11.[/blue] Whenever a card is played next to another, the player must discard additional cards from their hand equal to the *difference* between the 2 cards. In this case, [red]11 - 10 = 1,[/red] so our teammate discarded [red]1[/red] extra card before drawing back up to 5.1tqt_cardpeice_10670dfd06574fb00
Nekonyancer[blue]Now it's our turn![/blue] *Select the 8.* All of our possible placements for the 8 just popped up, along with how many cards we would need to discard. In this case, there's only one possible space.2tqt_cardpeice_8670dfd06574fb00
NekonyancerWe can't place the 8 here because [red]8 - 2 = 6.[/red] Thus, we would have to discard [red]*6*[/red] cards to place the 8 there, and our hand isn't big enough to allow for that!3tqt_placement_1670dfd06574fb00tqt_placement_1 13
Nekonyancer*Place the 8 [blue]here.[/blue]* [red]10 - 8 = 2,[/red] so we have to discard [red]2 cards[/red] to place it. *Select the 17 and 56. Then continue.*4tqt_placement_2670dfd06574fb00tqt_placement_2 7
NekonyancerGreat! If you look at our hand, you'll see that we drew a [blue]*Finish*[/blue] card. These cards can only be played in [red]*this space,*[/red] and only once the entire 6x6 grid is filled up. When someone plays a Finish card, everyone wins!2tqt_placement_36670dfd12ea79a00tqt_placement_36 6 tqt_cardpeice_81 2
NekonyancerSince we're a long way from that point, we'll discard this card soon to help pay for others. Again, there are *four* other Finish cards, and we only need *one* to win the game. Just be careful not to discard the last one! [blue]I'll fast-forward a little bit now...[/blue]3tqt_cardpeice_81670dfd12ea79a00
NekonyancerOkay, check this out. Our partner is about to play a card in [red]*this space,*[/red] which is *between* two cards. In this situation, BGA will calculate the difference between: • the played card and the card to the *left* (1). • the played card and the card to the *right* (2). Our partner will discard cards according to whichever difference is *smaller!*1tqt_placement_32670dfd8432c8300tqt_placement_32 6 tqt_cardpeice_72 17 tqt_cardpeice_76 18
NekonyancerThey played the *73.* How many cards did they have to discard? Left difference: [red]73 - 72 = *1.*[/red] Right difference: [red]76 - 73 = *3.*[/red] They discarded [red]1 card![/red]1tqt_cardpeice_73670dfd8ef12aa00
Nekonyancer[blue]I think you got the hang of it![/blue] Eventually, if players do not play well, they may [red]run out of cards to draw.[/red] In that case, they will continue to play with the cards left in their hand, but will no longer draw cards to replenish their hand.1tqt_drawpile_0670dfdf50c22500tqt_drawpile_0 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you got the hang of the game, but there are a few things left to explain.[/blue] There's an alternative to playing a card on one's turn: [red]discarding 2 cards.[/red] I didn't demonstrate this during the tutorial because discarding 2 cards for nothing is, of course, a very bad move. But as the board fills up, players may find themselves in situations where they have no other choice!2maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
NekonyancerIf a player's [blue]*deck*[/blue] runs out of cards, they can continue playing with the cards in their hand, but they will no longer draw at the end of their turn. If a player finds themself [red]unable to take an action[/red] on their turn (because they're down to 0 or 1 card in their hand and can't play anything), [red]everyone loses the game![/red]3tqt_drawpile_0670dfdf50c22500tqt_drawpile_0 7
Nekonyancer[green]You remember how to win the game, right?[/green] Everyone must fill up the entire 6x6 grid. Then someone must then play one of the five *Finish* cards in [blue]*this space.*[/blue]4tqt_placement_36670dfdf50c22500tqt_placement_36 7
NekonyancerOnce you have more experience with the standard game, you may want to increase the difficulty in the lobby options. This can be done by removing some island cards or by incorporating one of the *mini-expansions.*5maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
Nekonyancer[blue]*Mini-expansion 1: Jagged Rocks*[/blue]---A special Jagged Rocks tile is placed randomly on one of the six border cards on the left side of the grid, preventing cards from being played in that row. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf465e6a6.20449125.jpg[/img]6tqt_cardpeice_70670dfdf50c22500tqt_borderpeice_-1_0 6 tqt_borderpeice_-1_1 6 tqt_borderpeice_-1_2 6 tqt_borderpeice_-1_3 6 tqt_borderpeice_-1_4 6 tqt_borderpeice_-1_5 6
NekonyancerDuring each turn, after taking an action but before drawing back up to 5 cards, each player must... • Move the rocks to different row. *OR* • Discard 2 cards to leave the rocks where they are. The Jagged Rocks card is *removed* from the game when four of the six rows are completely filled.7maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
Nekonyancer[blue]*Mini-expansion 2: Sea Monsters*[/blue]---At the beginning of the game, *3/4/5* Sea Monster cards are shuffled with the rest before they are dealt out to players. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf4852b98.20780556.jpg[/img]8maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
Nekonyancer[red]Sea Monster cards cannot be discarded.[/red] The only way to get rid of them is to play them on top of cards in the 6x6 grid. When this is done, both the monster and the number card under it are *destroyed.* If someone tries to play a Finish card while someone has a Sea Monster in their hand, they are prevented from doing so and must do something else on their turn.9maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
NekonyancerThere are two more *mini-expansions* and four *variants,* providing endless replayability. But if you want to try those, you'll have to buy the physical game! :)10maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Tranquility!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *James Emmerson* for designing this game, *Lucky Duck Games* for publishing, *bhauman3* for developing the game, and *ufm* for maintaining it! Have fun! :D11maintitlebar_content670dfdf50c22500
